On the 13th of November participants from 29 different countries and 150 delegates met at the Ambition 1.5oC: Global Shipping’s Action Plan summit in Bonn.
The summit was organised by many different institutions, including the International Windship Association. The Ambition 1.5oC: Global Shipping’s Action Plan summit gathered experts from across the shipping industry to create the Action Plan required for shipping to meet the high ambition level indicated in the Paris Agreement.
“Be courageous about your thinking, rise to the challenge of solving this problem, be bold and try to change the world just a little bit”, said the key note speaker Dr. Jennifer Baxter when opening the summit.
Climate change and future regulations on carbon emissions provide a need to be looking at alternative fuels and different options in propulsion, in order to meet the demands of the future, and protect the environment.
Gavin Allwright, secretary of The International Windship Association took part in the summit, and participated in panel discussions.
“I am incredibly optimistic in the development of alternative fuels going forward. Wind is a significant way to reduce the amount of bunkering fuel that we need to,” he says.

The Port of Vordingborg is working on expanding the port areas significantly, to attract new shipping companies and to create growth possibilities for existing companies in the Port. In August 2017, the second and third phase of the sustainable port expansion was started.
The Port of Vordingborg is pilot leader of the DUAL Ports SOIL project. The aim of the pilot is to expand the port’s areas to make more room for new and existing clients.
The need for more space will be realised in a sustainable way, by reusing soil, incinerated garbage (slag), and other recycled resources, e.g. concrete and asphalt from construction works in the surrounding area to expand.
On the 24th of August, the Mayor of Vordingborg Municipality, Mr. Michael Seiding Larsen took the first official sod for the second and third port expansion, which are expected to be finished in 2019.
“We are very pleased to have started the realisation of the expansion. It has been a complicated process, and there are many factors that must be considered. We have been working for a long time on the regulations, convincing authorities, persuading the local community, and calculating the outcome of the project. The biggest challenges of the realisation of the project have been the human factor and the availability of resources.” says Jan-Jaap Cramer, Development Manager of Port of Vordingborg.
In order to build with sustainable materials, the recycled resources have to be available, but they also have to be of a certain volume, quality and uniformity. Also, regulations on what resources may be used and the quantities of such has been a challenge.
The local community and neighbors of the port have been invited to hear about the project – the Port of Vordingborg has held several Open Days and guided tours, where the port has invited everyone interested to come and see the activities on the port and to hear about the port expansion project based on recycling of materials.
The sustainable port expansion will bring down the carbon footprint significantly and save direct costs of establishing the port. It will also bring down the carbon footprint and save indirect costs for local and regional companies, since transportation is brought down.
The next steps
“Now that the port expansion is in the process of being realized, we are going to focus on the implementation of LED lights, in a transnational cooperation with the Port of Emden and the Port of Zwolle. We look forward to improve the green profile of the port further with sustainable lighting in the near future.” says Jan-Jaap Cramer.

The Port of Vordingborg is a small entrepreneurial port located on the island of Madsnedø, in the sea between Zealand and Falster in Denmark. The port has two bulk terminals, handling corn, stone and gravel. Two of the biggest clients of the port is DLG, one of Denmark’s largest agricultural companies, and Yara, a Norwegian company producing fertilizer.
The new Storstrøm Bridge south of Vordingborg will be built in the coming years, and the Port of Vordingborg has been chosen as the production port for the consortium, which will enhance the possibilities for growth on the port, and increase job opportunities for the local community.

Ambition 1.5oC: Global Shipping’s Action Plan will gather experts from across the shipping industry to create the Action Plan required for shipping to meet the high ambition level indicated in the Paris Agreement. The Action Plan developed will be used as a briefing document for UNFCCC delegates.
This will be a highly energetic and productive day-long summit held on Monday November 13, 2017 with selected, invitation-only participants coming together on the spacious MS RheinFantasie. The event will host only a limited number of presentations and innovation focus sessions. It will be mainly focused on moderated work group sessions.
Attendees will work together to examine the technologies, facilities and tools required to create an ambitious, low carbon action plan using a reviewed and accelerated ‘pathway’ developed by the Sustainable Shipping Initiative as its framework. The outcomes of this summit will be enhanced by the collaborative approach being adopted, bringing together representatives from other industry and policy groups that are working in the field, to deliver a strong industry-led plan that can meet the 1.5oC challenge.
Deliverables from this unique summit will include the Action Plan Outline, which participants will be pledging action on, a briefing document for UNFCCC delegates and a media package, which we expect to have a significant impact at COP23 and beyond. The event and attending participants travel and accommodation will be fully carbon offset.

About the conference
In addition to digital transformation and questions about which new digital business models will change shipping in the future, questions on sustainable and cost-effective ship operations are among the central topics that currently occupy the maritime industry.
The third edition of Sustainable Shipping 2017 once again focuses on technologies and economic considerations in the topic selection. During the COP23, the renewable energy industry will present its solutions in the context of a stand-alone event against the COP23 delegates, including many decision-makers from governments, international organizations and NGOs.

For the third time the partners participating in the European project DUAL Ports met to discuss the possibilities of transforming ports into more environmentally friendly ones. At the partner-meeting in Emden this week, the project managers reported on the current state of their particular DUAL Ports projects and the progresses already made. During the three days in Emden and Leer, the challenges that still have to be overcome were discussed together. “We all face the same challenges. We want to benefit from the experience of our partners and work together to develop larger solutions”, explains Dr. Matthäus Wuczkowski, Sustainability Manager at Niedersachsen Ports.
Exchange with the project MariGreen
Moreover, the participants of the DUAL Ports met with the MariGreen project in order to share knowledge and exchange experiences. The MariGreen project also deals with the possibilities of making the maritime economy more environmentally friendly. However, the DUAL Ports project primarily concentrates on finding solutions for port authorities, while the MariGreen project is mainly focused on the development of concepts for shipping companies. At the meeting, experts from both sides were able to discuss within small groups the potential and current challenges of LNG, hydrogen and sail cargo. All participants agreed that there will be a variety of environmentally friendly fuels in the maritime economy in the future. However, which low-emission fuels will ultimately prevail, is largely dependent on medium-term legislation, on the incentive mechanisms of the market and on the awareness of society.
“In order to work efficiently on these issues in the future, greater cooperation between ports and the maritime sector is necessary”, stresses Wuczkowski. “For this reason, we are also planning to promote a close exchange between the two projects in the future.”, Katja Baumann, managing director of MARIKO GmbH, agreed.

The DUAL Ports project
The European project DUAL Ports, launched in 2015 and financed by the EU and the Interreg North Sea Region Programme, brings together ports, businesses and scientific institutions from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Scotland. The aim of the cooperation is to jointly develop solutions for the long-term reduction of CO2 emissions and environmental pollution caused by the activities of the port industry. Through the exchange of knowledge between the partners and the emerging synergies, the development and implementation of sustainability innovations in ports should be promoted and facilitated.
DUAL Ports met for the third partnership meeting in Emden, Germany

The partnership meeting was very productive, and gave way for new thoughts on transnational cooperation.

A productive discussion of the SAIL pilot between Fair Winds Trust, the International Wind Ships Association and the Port of Oostende.
Dr. Matthäus Wuczkowski introduced the 900 meter loading tracks, where the installation of LED intelligent lighting will be realised.
During the next Partnership Meeting held in Germany, the DUAL Ports partners will participate in a workshop, sharing and discussing knowledge with another Interreg project, MariGreen.
The MariGreen project, like DUAL Ports, is focused on developing innovations for sustainable and low-carbon shipping that will ultimately reduce the ecological footprint of the shipping industry. MariGreen is a collaborative project between Germany and the Netherlands. In the period 2015 – 2018, the MariGREEN Project will unite initiatives from both countries under the banner of ‘Green Shipping’.
The technical objectives of MariGreen will focus on LNG and wind-powered drive systems as well as green logistics alternatives – all with a focus on resource efficiency and safety in coastal and maritime transport.
On October 24, DUAL Ports and MariGreen will come together in a joint workshop in Leer, Germany. The workshop will include an introduction of both projects, presentations of the three common pilots; SAIL, HYDROGEN and LNG, as well as discussions on development, progress and results.

October 23 – 25, 2017
On October 23-25, the DUAL Ports partnership will meet in Emden, Germany, to discuss the latest developments of the eight pilot projects. Matthäus Wuczkowski is sustainability manager in Niedersachsen Ports and will be giving a tour of the Port of Emden, including a status of the LED and the GREEN OFFICER pilots.
Katja Baumann from Mariko will visit the meeting and present another Interreg project, Mari Green.
